EXCHANGE CLUB OF FRESNO
“INTERCHANGE”

September 2, 2010

President Jim Irvine welcomed the group and immediately welcomed our guest, Debbie Lahners here to visit her step-mother, Exchangite Joan Adams.  (Joan later told us that she met Debbie for the first time yesterday)…how nice to have her at the meeting!  Joan also led the Flag Salute and David Brown (our wonderful Chaplain) offered the blessing.  Our Secret Greeter was revealed as Don Scrivner who caught several fellow Exchangites who did not shake his hand.  One lone tardy member…….long time member Malcolm Masten….tardy for the first time ever!  He was excused and applauded!

A few announcements followed….President Jim wants to begin an official recognition of all of the Exchangite Veterans…with the creation of a permanent record of their military service.  This would be an ongoing project of the club and would include all branches of the military and all members who served either at home or abroad.  What a great idea!    Also, President Jim reminded all members to complete the “Interest Finder” he has distributed so that future Offices and Board Positions can be filled with those who express an interest.  Additionally, President Jim requested assistance from our members in assisting North Fresno Exchange in their fundraiser.  The job is not difficult and the shifts are not long…help take in $$ for parking at CSUF football games.  Please call Jim if you can help out….sounds like a great way to get to know our fellow Exchangites!  Wayne Bright had 10 more “Football Books” to sell at the beginning of the meeting…5 minutes later he had “0”.  Thanks to all who assisted with this fundraiser!  It is now officially a “sell out”!   By popular demand, Marvin Arnold is arranging a bus trip to the Caruthers’ Fair…Date:  10/1/10…Time:  TBA….Cost:  also TBA.  More on this fun event later!  Lastly, Pete Hauck told a joke!  Funny!

Next came “Happy Dollars”…Begun by Dick Arnold who was happy that Judy Wilson forgot to pick up his $2.00…John Stahl who has a new American Made car…Richard Grill whose son has a major position with Ethan Allen Furniture and whose daughter-in-law has a new job with a CPA…Ron Johnson who is going to Tahoe…Marvin Arnold who is a happy person and happy that Henry T. Perea and Debbie Lahners were at the meeting…Richard Seyller for the donation of children’ books from Petunia’s Place to the Marjaree Mason Center…and whose family is sailing around the Greek Islands…Don Scrivner for Wayne Bright’s great job in selling the “Football Books”…Karen for the anticipated arrival of her first great-grandchild…Mary Lynch-Wiens for Joan Adam’s Flag Leading technique…Bill Smith for the friendship he feels at our meetings…Shannon for an experience of “six degrees of separation”…Jim Irvine who is thrilled with his Board of Directors!

No Exchange birthdays….however one guest birthday….a very Happy Birthday sung to guest, Debbie…she was overwhelmed with the serenade.  And one Exchange Anniversary…Dick Arnold…in the club for 21 years this week!

Allen Sevener was installed as our newest member by our longest time member Pete Hauck an active member since 1951)…Welcome, Allen as the newest member of our happy group……we are happy to have you as our fellow Exchangite!  Allen’s comments included that he was “old and retired”…he will fit right in!

Our speaker for the day was Henry T. Perea who has been a councilman on the Fresno City Council for the past eight years.  Henry T. (not to be confused with his father, Fresno County Supervisor Henry R.) began his remarks by advising the group that he is a new father…Ava Isabella is 9 weeks old and Henry T. is feeling the effects of sleep deprivation!  Despite the lack of sleep, Henry T. gave an interesting and informative talk about the state of the city…budget woes…and answered many questions posed by the members present.  We thank Bill Smith for hosting Henry T. and of course Henry T. for his service to the community and for sharing his knowledge with us.

Next week….a representative from the American Red Cross discussing disaster preparedness.

Secret Greeter for 10/9/10….This member is known for being the best at everything he does…simply the best!

***Also…..a special invitation from Barbara Mendes and Wayne Bright…The Fresno County Division of Retired Teachers invites you to their September meeting to hear Detective Dave Case.  His topic is “Scams and Frauds Targeting the Elderly”  Wednesday, September 8th at 11:00 AM at the Retired Teachers’ Education Center, 3930 E. Saginaw Way (at Ninth).  Parking int the back.
