This exclusive Exchange Club program honors the quiet, good deeds of America's unsung heroes. The woman who regularly donates her time to care for disadvantaged children - the man who voluntarily instructs disabled persons in some skill or craft - these are the kinds of exceptional individuals that the Book of Golden Deeds Award aims to recognize. These uncommon men and women exist in every city and town and, if not for this project, might never receive the acclaim that they deserve. |
2011 Recipients
Phillip and Patricia Rivera |
|
Philip and Patricia Rivera are the founders of the Fresno/Calwa Community Outreach Services (F.C.C.O.S.) Bread of Life Ministries. Their mission is to provide clothing, furniture and counseling to homeless individuals, families of low-income and the helpless. They do many block parties and a community toy drive. They have been serving food to the homeless for 24 years. Currently they drive their truck to the Umbrella Grove in Roeding Park every Wednesday where they feed 80 to 125 people including many children. In the summer months those numbers grow to 200. Philip was a former field worker who landed a job in a grocery store. However, he made some bad decisions in his life, which left him homeless. He made a promise to God that with His help, he would serve the people who were down and out. During that time Patricia came into his life and assisted him with this promise. She works in Food Service at Carver Elementary School. They are married and have acquired the help of their Church in fulfilling their mission. For their tireless efforts to cook for and to feed the homeless in Fresno, they are the 2011 Book of Golden Deeds recipients. |
Marvin Arnold presented the honorees with the Book of Golden Deeds plaque.
Phillip thanked the club for being recognized and recounted the history of their mission. |
